Royalty is also another clue - The Royle Family?

They're all football clubs from Lancashire and Cheshire (same neck of the woods). What's more, they all play in White/Blue or Blue/White. So, if 'Royalty' is another clue, as in 'Royal Blue' perhaps that's what they're getting at.

Also, Joe Royal used to manage Oldham Athletic, so perhaps he's had connections with the other clubs.
