A question about stereotypes.
I'm from the States and I was wondering about American stereotypes in media in the UK.
Like:
Are there many?
Are they generally accepted as true?
Does it color(colour) your impressions when you meet somebody from the US?

Hi Cowtipper,
I suspect most stereotypes come from watching the TV, whether it's comedies, movies or politicians. Certainly the stereotype of southerners is that they are all rednecks - Dubya didn't do anything to dispel that one ! Nor did all the people from Texas and Oklahoma that I worked with for 7 years when I worked for Halliburton - they were unfailingly rednecks. Most were nice people though as long as you avoided politics...

The reason I ask is I worked with a guy from Britain that said we had a very bad reputation there. We don't get anything but old sit-coms and BBC World News, and America isn't a big topic in "Are You Being Served?". I was wondering if television stereotyping had anything to do with what he was talking about. Mostly he said "loud, rude, and pushy".
