Corrie gone bad

I have always been a big fan of Coronation Street, but even I think I have had enough of it. It is fine to have a gay storyline, but to have 3 sets of characters all involved in a gay plotline at the same time is overkill.
Also on Friday with the scene with Peter and Leanne arguing, Peter thought it was fine to simply shut the bookies and chuck the punters out, because he wanted to finish his argument with Leanne. I know it is simply a fictional story, but it is supposed to reflect real life and if a retail shop behaved in this manner, you would soon go out of business!
I hope it will start to get a bit more realistic again soon before they lose even more of their viewers.

Nothing realistic about soaps, watched corrie, but its now off more than on.
The Rovers would have shut ages ago with the amount of fights, and the constant trying to find ever more bizarre storyline, like James getting a loan on his grandads house, not in a million years.

How many sets of characters are involved in say, divorce at any 1 time? Or theft? Or adultery? Or dirty schemes? Would lots of that be ok? Or do you only count the gay ones....?
The world is full of gay people...all having lives and dramas too - why shoud it only be allowed to show 1...?
As for peter, plenty of people woudl close their shop if serious family issues occurred...

Yes, I cannot see that James could have got the loan that easily! I wish they would check the facts in a reallife situation before running with these storylines. I think we can all accept a bit of artistic licence or you would never have a story, but if that situation could never happen in real life in a million years, then the writers should think twice before using that plotline.

Joko, I think you need to ask yourself if it was all likely to happen in the same street at the same time! Corrie has not introduced 3 divorces or 3 murders or thefts at the same time, so why is it okay now? I understand the latest producer of the series is gay, which is one reason why we suddenly have all the gay plotlines. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having 3 sets of gay characters, but is it really realistic to have them all appear so quickly?

It may well do but no one gets a loan in a day or two, the latest storylines are bizarre to say the least, it's gone completely away from the type of drama it used to be. There have been more people in prison in corrie than anywhere i know, gail, david, fizz, john stape, and so many more

sue - I totally agree, in fact I sent an email to Phil Collinson regarding this and how the storylines were now far from reality.

I have nothing against gays (in fact my best friend is a gay guy), but as you say, 3 sets of gay characters in one small street is pushing it a bit! It would be great if the plots got back to the nitty gritty of a northern town with strong characters. It would really be worth watching then.

Tizzi, I have Coronation Street from the start. I remember Elsie Tanner fighting in the street, Lucille the drug addict, Emily having sex with the Hungarian before she was married, Emily having the bigamous marriage, Ernest going to prison, Ernest being murdered at work, Valerie Barlow kidnapped by a rapist, Betty Turpin's illegitimate child, the Rover's burning down, the viaduct collapsing, the outrageous characters - Richard Hillman, Maya wotsername, Charlie Stubbs, Tony Gordon.
The bonkers storylines - a woman froze to death in Firman's freezer, hostage at Freshcos, Reg and Maureen's silliness, Emily up a tree....

In the 25 years I've lived in my cul de sac the only drama we've had is one neighbour having an affair. Maybe I should move. I have never seen women fighting (or even arguing) in the street.

Sue, the point I'm making is if there were three of those things would you even notice? Or is it just because they're gay an thats 'icky?'
I seem to reCall john stape killed three by accident...
Also not sure how a characters sexual preference is a storyline...

hc - I have also watched Corrie from the start and I remember most of those storylines you mentioned. I still think it was more realistic then and with the silly storylines now, I'm debating whether to carry on watching.

Hello all, thank you for your replies, I must apologise, the 3 gay plotlines I was talking about included Mark the transvestite, obviously I should not have included him in this. But archeraddict has come to my rescue with mentioning James who is gay, Ken was arguing with his son who wanted to disown James, Ken supported James and I seem to remember that is why James has moved in. However I realise that this is not a current storyline!
Joko, my point is entirely about the level of plotlines running at the same time and really has nothing to do with the fact these characters are gay. I would be complaining in the same way if there were 3 murderers running about street at the same time. It is purely the amount that seems to me to be unrealistic.
Corrie used to have a nice balance of drama and comedy, but definately seems to have lost it's way over the past few months.

I think the problem with most soaps is that they are on too often. It was much easier for them to maintain good quality, with more credible story lines, when it was on twice a week. 5 episodes weekly is crazy.

In general, I think the actors do well, given that they have no time to rehearse and it's just a conveyor belt of story-lines, with all the soaps trying to out do the others.

I wish they would go back to concentrating on quality and not quantity but, while they remain the most watched output, that ain't gonna 'appen!
