Is the BBC trying to drive our children insane?

Sometimes in the mornings when setting my DVD player to record a later programme I witness children's programmes put out on C.Beebies, which seem to me to be manic and absolutely appalling; the presenters are all screaming (are they are on drugs?) to rap sounds, the colours are garish, there seems nothing to calm and stimulate a child's imagination. Should we not demand a return to The Magic Roundabout etc. and do any young parents feel comfortable allowing their toddlers to watch this stuff?

there are some excellent childrens programmes, admittedly some are quite boisterous, perhaps they are aimed at somewhat older children. The magic roundabout, i don't think any child or adult for that matter really knew what was going on there. I read once that some students found it very trippy, in the drug sense, not sure myself. But i love Shaun the Sheep, the best programme on any channel. Horrible Histories is also one to savour.

I'm with Em, Shaun the Sheep is fantastic, as is Horrible Histories. I've also got a bit of a soft Spot for Charlie & Lola, Lola's adorable.

I love childrens tv, and would happily sit down with the children
so we can roll about with laughter at shaun the sheep and his pals. There was one programme, a brilliant cartoon called Bernard, who i think was a polar bear, his antics would give Tom and Jerry a run for their money.

Eric Thompsom, father of famous actress Emma, received the films without dialogue from the French, and made up his own narration, 'Meaning' wasn't really a priority. Your reminiscences are interesting, but my question is, are all these manic programmes good for children's wellbeing?

I think everyone forgets what Kid's TV was like. Just because you don't understand it now doesn't mean you wouldn't have bloody loved it then.

Some childrens programmes may seem manic but possibly only to the adult brain and interpetation.

Children are stimulated by bright and loud colours, not too sure about the noise tho.

Has no-one mentioned Muffin the Mule yet?
Sadly it seems to be an urban myth about the names of Captain Pugwash, but for years I believed there had been a Master Bates and Seaman Staines.

I miss Camberwick Green and Trumpton.

I also remember a Watch With Mother called Joe (about a boy called Joe and lorry drivers at a lorry service station) but I've not been able to trace it since on You-tube. Looking back, I don't think that would be allowed now as I'm sure he used to go off in the cabin with non-CRB checked lorry drivers.

I think the Clangers were quite scary in their own special way.

There's a question about whether hectic "action" is as usefully stimulating as, say, storytelling. But assuming children are read to at bed time, why not let them trip their tiny minds out?

Even though my little girl watched cbeebies I did wean her on Roobarb & Custard, Button Moon, The Clangers etc. Youtube has all the classics on there.
