In a survey by 100 people they say but has anybody ever taken part in a survey.
Yesterday there was a round on currency and somebody answered the "dollar" . The answer given was that only 54% knew the dollar was a currency. Others on there were Rouble 6%, Yen25%, Zloty, 2%. Rand 9%, Yen 25%. Surely this cannot be true . Cannot believe that only 54% knew the dollar was a currency let alone the other ones!
From briefly watching the programme I assumed the people polled are given a short space of time to name as many currencies as possible (presumably other than the pound and Euro). The percentages of all selected answers then add up to 100. If that's the case I'm surprised the dollar accounted for more than around 25% of responses.
I don't think the figures mean only 54% of people could think of a dollar.
I think thet ask 100 people to name a currency, so 54 said dollar the other 48 named different currencys, making up a 100. I dont think they ask do you know the dollar is a currency.
Sometimes the obvious ones are the ones you forget. There have been other topics where the results were odd, people tend to know more about "popular culture" than literature, politics, currencies etc.
I have been in the audience for the recording of this show and can confirm that they are not asked any questions like that. I too, have often wondered where they get the 100 people as I have never been asked.
If I were asked to name a currency and I answered "Rand" it wouldn't mean I hadn't heard of the dollar gollob; but it would mean I had answered a pointless question.
