One of the questions on 'Pointless' today was think of a country what begins with the same letter as its capital. For example Brazil= Brasilia.
One of the contestants put forward Taiwan whose capital is Taipei but it was disallowed and I don't remember hearing an explanation. Do any of you know the reason why?
I didn't see the programme, but I think that Taiwan is no longer a UN-recognised sovereign state which I believe is one of the criteria in this show. This is only conjecture, I may be wrong though.
Yes - I wondered that too. Apparently the Republic of China has sovereignty over Taiwan (according to Wikipedia) but it's very controversial. I'm surprised they didn't explain it, though - and I'm pretty sure they didn't. We can't all have missed it.
The answer should have been allowed . I was suprised that no explanation was given as it was one of my picks. The only answer I can think of is it is also known as the Republic Of China, which has nothing to do with China as they hate each other. Then again I would think every Atlas would call the country Taiwan.
