Has anyone else watched today's episode of Privates? All week on BBC1 at 2.15. I recommend it for anyone of an age to remember when young men had to do their stint as squaddies.
(And this dramatised mini-series has beauteous Patrick Baladi in it, too)

Not for 'pinko pacifist pansies'

I cannot imagine National Service working in todays multi-cultural society.
If they ever tried to get me to do it, I'd tell them to stick it RIGHT up their what-no-questions and voluntarily go to jail.
Why were females never expected to do anything?
Sorry, that should have read 'ASK no questions'
Yes just watched it. my husband was one of the lucky ones who was too young to be in it. But think it would have done him some good if he had. lol. maybe then he could iron.! anyway can anyone please tell me who the dark haired one is with the pretty green eyes,. Have seen him in a few things before.

My uncle did National Service and loved it. During his time he did 2 'O' levels which he couldn't do at his secondary modern school, and they taught him how to drive, which got him a job when he came back home.
Both my brothers got good trades from NS that has kept them & their families in comfort for the last 40+ years.

lilacben - I think you mean Patrick Baladi. Yum.
my ex did ns..one of the last..did him good by his own middle class pampered admission....still unbearable to live with..hence ex...lol .
Do some of the louts and thugs hanging around today the world of good...teach them discipine ..and...might make men of them!!!
agree..
It's a real shame it was stopped. I don't think there would be half the problems there are with a lot of youths today if it had continued. A lot of men would be able to look after themselves more, instead of expecting their mothers/wives to do it!
Hi marge, not not him , although he is yummy but the one in the blue coat on the photo above., he also had a ban the bomb badge on.?

Apologies lilacben, my lust for Baladi blinded me to anyone else.... the boy you mean is Alexander Vlahos, who was Mordred in the recent Merlin series on Saturday nights.
Its ok just found him. He is Keeyan played by Alexander Vlahos. He was in Merlin. Thankyou goodness for that .lol . Brenda x
I don't understand valmave's comment, plenty of multicultural people would be conscrpted if they were eligible British citizens.
Anyone old enough to remember "The Army Game" with Corporal Springer and Cupcake. That was a a laugh! Maybe they will show it again sometime.
