One of the characters (Robert) has recently lost his leg in a mine explosion. It is very realistic which begs the question has the actor playing him really lost his leg and they have written it into the series. If not, how is it done?

Near the end of the series Labyorteaux's character lost his leg, leading to speculation that the actor had in fact lost his leg, but the show's spokesperson, Diane Ekeblad, stated, “I’m happy to report Patrick Labyorteaux has not suffered any injury regarding his leg. He’s just a very good actor
No, Patrick Labyorteaux did not lose a leg. It is done with the magic of TV.

A few years earlier an incident resulted in his jaw being broken which did need a hastily concocted sub-plot to explain his character's jaw being wired.
That was a very harrowing storyline in JAG. I can understand why you might think he'd really lost his leg. I thought the same about Gary Sinise (the Captain from Vietnam) in Forest Gump, it looked so real.

Thanks everyone, it appears JAG finished in 2005. Ah well, perhaps I will find something else to take it's place.
