Mention was made of this when the original publicity shots were issued. I think I remember it being mentioned that Peter Capaldi rarely removes his wedding ring for a role. In the case of The Doctor the ring could be explained in many ways.

The Doctor has a granddaughter, Susan, who appeared in the first year of the programme when it originally began in 1963. Presumably her mother or father wasn't born out of wedlock.
