Downton Abbey

We have just come back from holiday and I think the first episode of Downton Abbey was on the 20th September, just had a look on catch up tv, and the first one tat they are showing is the 27th, which I have just watched. Is that the first ? Why is Thomas Barrow being made to leave by Carson ? Why is the old guy with the farm that is a friend of Daisy having to leave ?

There are rumours of financial cutbacks, hence Thomas is looking round. The old guy is the father of the chap she married who died in WW1, the estate has had to be sold off and Daisy gave the new owners a mouthful, hence he's off!
