Tv/film Characters Smoking

This really is a pathetic question.....
When I see a TV/film character smoking, I wonder if the actor actually smokes in really life or if the character has a written in smoking habit. Therefore there must be fake fags?

For the series George Gently they used Herbal Cigarettes.

In the film Addie Pray Tatum O'Neil smoked lettuce cigarettes. John Thaw and Laurence Fox really smoked....I guess it depends.
