What happened between Dot and Joe in Paulines house,just saw him fall through the window.Thought Dot said he killed Pauline-how?

Dot went round to Paulines to pick up a teddy for Rebecca, while she was there, Joe turned up. they got chatting and he confessed that he hit Paulline over the head with a frying pan on xmas day! By this stage they were in the upsatirs bedroom as Joe was packing his things, Jim went to the house looking for Dot, and as he walked in to the bedroom, Joe grabbed hold of Dot (as if kidnap sort of thing) there was a struggle and Joe fell through the window.
