i was wondering how long has the progame top gear been aired for now

Since 1977. I'll see if I can find out the actual date for you.

I've found the date of the first NATIONAL broadcast - 13 July 1978. Before that it was a Midlands regional programme.

There was certainly an edition broadcast in the Midlands on 15 November 1977, which might have been the first. (The British Film Institute archive has it down as having started in the Midlands in "early 1978", which is definitely incorrect and I'll get in touch with them and see if I can get it changed.)

I don't know if it was the same type of show back then, but there is a Top Gear from 1964 listed on a BBC database...

The one from 1964 definitely isn't the same programme as if you look at the entry, it's a radio programme! The equivalent programme in the 1960s was "Wheelbase", which ran for years and years but seems to have been completely wiped from the collective memory.
