Old series from the 70s

Does anyone remember a TV series from around the late 1970s (I think) which centred around a teacher/lecturer in a college or university who had an affair with a student? I thought the title of the series was something along the lines of 'a learning man' for some reason, but can't find anything even vaguely like that having existed! I'm sure I didn't imagine it! Anyone else remember the series and what it was called? Thanks. x

It could be "The History Man" which if I remenber correctly starred Anthony Sher
