Why is it necessary to pay for a T.V. licence if you already pay "Sky" to receive broadcasts?
Most people "own" their television/s and if you only use "Sky" it seems as though your paying twice.
Or is there more to it than that?

the bbc don't have adverts and like to waste money
You're just paying for the BBC....that's it.
Way back in heaven knows when, I guess it was to pay for all the transmitters and networks etc.

I very rarely watch BBC so maybe I could ask for a reduction in the amount I pay for my licence.......nice thought!

Thank you Dr.Filth

Thank you everyone.
The TV Licence is generally opposed by people who aren't bothered about the quality of what's broadcast. When all TV including the BBC is self-funded effluent at the brain-dead level of Sky and ITV, these people will be happy. And before all the predictable whinges of "they're all crap anyway" - they're not. Whatever you think of the BBC, it is better quality than the rest, with a much richer range of programmes and programming. But sure, if you want it to be the same dross as ITV and Sky, go ahead and campaign for abolition of the licence fee.
I'd pay it....just to not have to watch ads
Friend of mine (who`s stingey) doesn`t have a tv any more thus not paying a licence fee. But he listens to BBC radio and catches up with things on BBC internet news and iplayer so he gets it for nothing and everyone else subsidises him (crafty devil)
Backdrifter, Why don't the BBC encrypt the signal and let the public decide how good they are ?
because then they'd be just another commercial organisation with programming determined by the lowest common denominator

Look at what ITV is now - a mass of soaps, detective dramas, "talent" shows and old films.
I don't mind paying for my licence..........I do wish, however, that the BBC weren't quite so cavalier about how they spend it !
Yes well the Daily Mail happen to Own a huge chunk of ITN News

So believing anything they say about the BBC is like asking Richard Branson what he thinks of BA!
Yes Rebel Souls, the DM is SUCH a reliable, reasonable and accurate source for stories about the BBC isn't it?
here's an example they are bemoaning the repeats of things like Eastenders being repeated on BBC3!

That's kind of the point

Next thing you know they'll be pointing out that Channel 4+1 is full of repeats
Backdrifter if the BBC is so good encrypt the signal let us have a choice.

What are the lefties afraid of, will they lose that much money ?
RebelSouls the point about keeping the licence that some of us are making is that it maintains their distinct, advert-free, higher-quality output, as jake-the-peg said in response to you.

Oh, by the way - "the lefties" - thanks for trotting that old chestnut out, it gave me a good laugh
