TV info downloads

I have recently lost my onscreen info (EPG & synopsis).I know that the reason is due to switching off completely at night instead of leaving on standby[Carbon footprint people didn't tell us that would happen].However I am told that if I start leaving on stanby again, the info. will return in due course. What now puzzles me is why , when a new recorder is bought and coupled up to the TV, the "info" is there already, rather than having to wait for the night-time download whenever that might be!!! (any ideas Stoofur or anybody)??
