Beauty and the Beast is a story to show that love conquers all. The Disney film is based on the fairy tale La Belle et la Bête by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and the setting is a small French town. It is one of only two animated films to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The film is one of the first to be released during the period known as the "Disney Renaissance" and was an instant hit. Partly due to the fact that the storyline was much meatier than previous fairytales and the female lead character was much more of a modern woman and not the archetypal swooning heroine.
A spoiled prince is transformed into a hideous beast to await the love that will break the curse. Belle is imprisoned by the Beast in his castle in exchange for the release of her father who had inadvertently trespassed onto the Beast’s grounds. Slowly Belle and the Beast begin to like and then love each other, and the Beast lets Belle go to her now sick father in his first act of selflessness. The Beast is then attacked by the arrogant Gaston who wants Belle for himself. As the Beast lies dying Belle returns and confesses her love thus breaking the curse.
