Star Trek The Motion Picture is a true science fiction classic. It is the first in the continuing series of Star Trek feature films and is based on the original TV series. The film was directed by Robert Wise and stars many of the TV show cast including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly.

The film received mixed reviews upon its release but was a massive box office hit; fans of the TV show loved it. The film helped the TV show gain cult status and made the franchise viable for the studio. In the USA The Motion Picture sold the most tickets of any film in the franchise until the 2009 Star Trek film.

Audiences loved the drama from the old crew and revelled in the pure hard core science fiction of the film. The Motion Picture is probably the closest thing to creator Gene Roddenbury’s vision of the future and is not just a shoot em up space film but has heart and a proper storyline which explores many themes including religion and life after death.

When Earth is threatened by a super advanced robot space ship Kirk and the rest of the crew set off in a new and improved Enterprise to save the world. The crew discover that there is something unexpected at the heart of the robot ship and the reasons for it heading towards Earth.
