The Wizard Of Oz

12:46 Fri 23rd Jul 2010 |

The Wizard Of Oz is one of the all time classic children’s films. It was based on the novel of the same name by L. Frank Baum and was directed by Victor Fleming who also directed Gone With The Wind. The film has a strong ensemble cast including Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr and Frank Morgan.

When the film was originally released it was not considered a huge box office hit, but it has since become one of those all time classics that people will want to watch again and again. One of the most notable features is the change from sepia tones to Technicolor at different points in the film; all the scenes in Oz are in colour and all the scenes from Kansas are in sepia.

Audiences love the Dorothy character even though sweet Judy Garland is never overly saccharine or sentimental, in fact, she is quite a strong heroine often helping and saving her friends. The three companions; the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, are all great for added humour and to help Dorothy on her emotional journey as well as her physical one.

During a tornado on her family's farm in Kansas, Dorothy, with her house and dog are taken to a fantastic land called Oz full of witches and wizards and magical creatures. On her journey to the Emerald City and a way home Dorothy meets friends and enemies and defeats the Wicked Witch of the West.
