The Wolfman

The Wolfman is a classic lycanthropic tale. It is very much based on the 1941 film of the same name. This film is a visual feast for the eyes. With its gothic mise-en-scene which rivals that of Tim Burton. As horror remakes go, it's one of the best from director Joe Johnston and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker.

The plot centres on Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro) who returns to his childhood home and estranged father (Anthony Hopkins) when his brother disappears. He overhears locals talking about a strange murder and gypsies are blamed. Lawrence is attacked by a superhumanly strong wolf-like creature and as a result he turns into the Wolfman.

The best thing about the film is the atmosphere -- this is an authentic a modern take on an old fashioned Gothic horror. With a cast consisting of Anthony Hopkins, Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving you expect the acting to be good and it does not disappoint.

The real saving grace for this film is the fantastic rendition of the caustic and waspish detective by Hugo Weaving. He really injects some much needed dry humour into the film. This, coupled with some exciting on-screen chemistry between Del Toro and Emily Blunt are the best elements of the Wolfman.
