What does a gaffer do behind the scenes on TV and film sets

A.� A gaffer is in charge of electrical work and also works closely with the director of photography to create a look or mood through lighting.

Q.� What exactly is a producer

A.� A producer is in charge of the administration creatively and crucially from its inception to the finish. A producer will often come up with the idea for a film. They then recruit a director and a writer. The next step is funding. They make a pitch to financiers who are interested in the nuts and bolts of the deal. Producers are the great impressarios of the business - they bring a project to life.

Q.� What does a screen writer do

A.� They create the original screen play� or adapt existing material.

Q.� Can you give me a breakdown to the credits

A.� It's quite easy to follow:

• The Director breaks down the screenplay and visualises how the film should be
• The Production Manager is responsible for scheduling and budgeting the film or programme
• The Continuity Superviser works closely with the producer to ensure that scenes will be cut together in the editing rooom. This involves taking photos�and notes to help establisg continuity
• The Casting Director chooses the actors
• Production Designers are responsible for overseeing sets and the overall look of the film
• The Editor is responsible for putting together all the rushes and then edits the overall project
• Location sound mixers use audio recorders or microphones to record and mix dialogue
• A Production Assistant is a general helper
