What is Equity

A.� The British Actors Equity Assocation (Equity) is the only trade union to represent artists from across the spectrum of artists and entertainment in the UK. It was formed in 1930 by a group of West End of London performers and it quickly spread to encompass a whole range of professional artists in the entertainment field.

Q.� So membership is not just for actors

A.� The membership now includes actors and actresses, but also has spread to singers, dancers, choreographers, stage managers, theatre directors and designers, variety and circus acts, radio presenters, supporting artists, stunt performers and theatre fight directors.

Q.� How can you join

A.� Anyone who can show they are professionally working in the entertainment field is eligible. For example, a singer from a concert, session or pop background, who can show they have had one professional paid engagement could apply; a director, designer or choreographer paid to work in a theatre would also be eligible.

Q.� Is there more to it than just the Equity Card

A.� The Equity Card,� the symbol for the aspiring thespian, is a unversially recognised symbol of status as a professional in the entertainment industry. The card can prove invaluable for jobbing actors hoping to get work . Equity, which is not politically affiliated, says its work is much more that that. The union says its main function is to negotiate terms and conditions of employment throughout the entire world of entertainment and to ensure these take into account social and economic changes. They are also linked at international level through the Federation of International Artists, which is useful for actors or performers heading overseas. The union says it also offers professionals help and advice, job opportunities, and importantly, can help workers collect royalties and residuals.
