A.One thing's for sure, it can be anything from Chocolat to Armegeddon -romance is in the eye of the beholder. A recent poll of 1,000 people by Dating UK suggested that the 1993 hit Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, was the slushiest of slushy movies.

Q. What other hits of the 1990s were big on romance

A. The blockbuster Titanic, made in 1997 with Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet, was one of the all-time favourites ot the decade. The scene where the elderly people lie with their arms around each other waiting to die has been hailed as one the most romantic ever shot. My Best Friend's Wedding with oscar winner Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney was a romantic smash hit, and 1995's While You Were Sleeping, with Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock, was hugely successful.

In Britain Four Weddings & A Funeral and Notting Hill firmly put Hugh Grant on the A-list of romantic leads.

Q. Wasn't the film Sabrina also really romantic

A. Sabrina was originally made in 1954 with Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and WIlliam Holsen. It was remade, to mixed reviews, with Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond and Greg Kinnard in 1995.

Q. Where would you put Pretty Woman

A. According to Dating UK, the 1990 movie Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, was the fifth most successful movie ever made. Critics said it gave everyone a chance to find their Mr Right, after the ruthless businesman fell for the streetwise hooker.

Q. And, in the Eighties

A. When Harry Met Sally, made in 1989 with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, was one of the most romanticfilms of the decade. Somewhere in Time, (1980) starring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour; and Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray (1997), were both huge hits with the slushy brigade. And who could forget An Officer And A Gentleman (1982) with Richard Gere and Debra Winger.

Q. When was Love Story made

A. The classic tearjrker Love Story was shot in 1970 with Ryan O'Neil and Ali McGraw.

Q. What is the film Brief Encounter about

A. For many, this is the ultimate love story. The classic romance is about a chance meeting on a railway station between the magnificent Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. Howards plays doctor Alec Harvey and Johnson housewife Laura Jesson. The pair fall hopelessly in love and continue to meet every Thursday at the station cafe . But they are both married and their love is doomed.

Q. What other old classics are there

A. Casablanca (1942) with Humprhey Bogarde and Ingrid Bergman; From Here To Eternity with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr; and the four-hour epic Gone With The Wind, directed by Victor Fleming. This charts Scarlett O'Hara's transformation from bitchy Southern belle to submissive loving wife against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) is the oldest of three daughters and is set on marrying Ashley Wilkes (Lesley Howard). When WIlkes marries someone else Scarlett embarks on a long campaign to win him back. Several husbands and a roguish Rhett Butler later, her love for Wilkes remains as unwavering as her love for Tara, the land she was born into.
