i have always understood that branded diesel was superior to supermarket diesel
because additives were added to provide a cleaner & more efficient burn.
is there any truth in this ?
cheers

Being branded won't automatically ensure it is superior, but if a particular brand boasts of something it adds for cleaner/efficient/whatever you can always try it at the extra cost and see if you think it a good deal for you.
Yes from experience. I drive Honda Civic and used supermarket diesel for the first few weeks I had it, had so many problems with the fuel that my car had to go back to garage 3 times before realising it was the diesel causing the problems. I had used my local Tesco at the time. Garage advised me to avoid supermarket fuel and only to use branded fuel from thereon. Never (touch wood) had problems since. Since spoken to few people who have had same problems and definitely avoid supermarket Diesel. Though I can say when I had my petrol car before, I used the supermarket petrol and had no problems with that.
In 20 yrs i have used both on variety of cars - absolutely no difference whatsoever .However, my brother is mechanic he gets lots of taxi drivers with car problems caused by supermarket fuel.
However , i only do 4000miles a year , so i guess high mileage travel like taxi drivers means supermarket is not best choice

yes there are clear differences with brands viz supermarkets in both fuels. The additives are loaded in at the loading rack for the trucks.......
As to gasoline/petrol I only use Shell or Chevron as they "overtreat" their detergents. I can testify to seeing various gasolines and the impact of their fuel on the valve systems and even at 5000 miles the difference is most marked, and this then effects performance. Shell in the US had advertised a fuel gain of 5% (and its really far more) , something that they haven't done over here, yet.
