No expert but a quick web search suggests 5w30 or 10w40 can be used.

Maybe you could search for a manual to download ? Never know, might get lucky.

For performance cars like yours, you cant go wrong, I have put this in all my cars which include Skylines, Starlet GT`s, Glanzas and Volvo T5 and non turbo cars and I never had any problems with loss ( cheap oil is too thin and leaks via gaskets etc ) or overheating etc.

Ultimately its down to you, but I would seriously recommend paying that bit extra as it really does pay in the long term, and for all those who recommend valvoline, redline etc yes they are slightly better but more expensive and on a V reg Golf slight overkill....

And I would suggest replacing the filter and flushing before putting the new oil in, and the results should be smoother engine with less noise for many miles to come.

Before anyone gets on the wagon, its purely my opinion after having used this oil for over 25 years now....

Don't rely on guesses!
10W40 semi-synthetic would be a good starting point, cost v performance. Fully synthetic if you are happy to spend a bit more.
VW are very funny about their oil .. ( insert own argument about how valid this is .... ) However 5w30 Synthetic ( not part synth ) will be fine. Of course it wouldn't seize up on 10w40 but it's not really what is suggested.
year/mileage?
5w is excessive given the relatively warm clime in this country - that's more for the depths of Poland in winter. 10w40 or 30 as 40 is also OTT. Semi syn if the car has any age/high mileage. Presume you are out of any service guarantees.
