Golf Diesel Overheating

I have a 2015 golf diesel 1600. After short journeys of about 5 miles the engine of my golf sometimes runs very hot and the radiator fan cuts in but the temp. gauge shows normal.Could it be a sticking thermostat.

If your gauge is showing normal then it probably is normal temperature. A faulty sensor or gauge would normally show cold or boiling.
What do you mean by "hot"? The engine fan will often run if you are travelling slowly or stuck in traffic.

You say it runs hot but the temperature gauge is on normal, what are the symptoms, is it boiling?

Perhaps the radiator fan runs when you turn-off the engine after a 5 mile trip. This is perfectly normal and happens on many cars as turning off the engine stops the water circulating, the hot water migrates to the top of the engine and the fan is triggered - again, nothing to worry about. Thermostats normally fail in the "open " position, so the car runs cold. If it did happen to stick closed the engine would boil and the fan running would have no effect since the water would not be circulating through the radiator.

What Month 2015? is it still under warranty? if so back to the dealers quick.

TWR seems to have been missing from here recently (he was asking about going to Ireland). If the Golf was new in 2015 it should still be under warranty as most cars now are 3 years warranty, some with mileage limitations.
