For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.malagabob; It's many years since I was there, then it was Ferrari s battling through the night with Matras (remember them?) and of course you have several races going on simultaneously in the different categories.
The great thing about Le Mans is that you never give up, because even if your engine fails the guy's engines still out there might fail too and I saw them disassembling and rebuilding a gearbox at 4 in the morning with a guy holding a mike observing it close up and describing to the surrounding crowd of petrol-heads each stage of the operation.
Darkness has no effect on the speed either, the lap record was broken during the night when I was there.
