My N Reg Fiesta sounds like I'm revving the engine when sitting idle in 1st gear or changing down to 1st. What's wrong with it, and more importantly, is it costly to put right! Also makes a squeeling noise when I accelerate in low gears - not all the time though.

is the squeeling when the engines cold?
If so, it could just be a belt slipping - nothing to woory about really.
As for the revving engine - does it do it when your sitting in neutral? your tickover might just be a bit high - simple to adjust - just need to locate the accelerator cable and there should be a twister on one end that tightens/loosens the cable slightly.
Squealing noise is the alternator belt - probably as well to change it as its as easy to do this as to adjust it and then you will have no worries as to it breaking. Belt is only a few pounds.
I agree its the alternator belt, I had that problem after fitting a replacement belt I had had in the boot for a few years.
After replacement it constantly needed to be readjusted so after a couple of weeks I bought a new one: I found the one that had been squealing had worn to the extent it had reduced in width by about 20%!!!
So get the belt adjusted or even replaced soon, it could break at any time!
