true mileage

HI I was interested in a Corsa which was three years old .He wanted �4750 for it.The sales man told me that it had been RAC inspected and he showed me the report .He said the car had done 9000miles.I asked him to show me the registration certificate.He said due to the DATA protection act that he could only tell me the name of the previous owner .So I had no way of proving that the mileage was genuine in spite of the RAC report .My question is ---is there no way of finding out the true mileage of a secondhand car .In the old days you were able to get the tax book and look at the previous owner and their address and then you could go back to them and check that the mileage was genuine. Answers would be greatly appreciated----James

If he will not let you find out the true mileage of the car I can only think he has something too hide.

Has the dealer got the service book for the car, also check the tax disc / mot cert (if it has been through one), these would have the mileage on them.

If they have "lost" the service book I would be sceptical. A car that is only 3 years old, with so few miles - I would expect the service book to be with the manual.

I believe the service interval for the corsa is 20 thousand miles (I may be wrong) so theoretically there may not have been any servicing done, but if they dont have the book, then there is something odd going on!!

if i was you id give that car a miss ive just bought a 206 and found out that the mileage is wrong. the way ifound out is that the brakes where worin down far to much for the low mileage on it. any mechanic can look at the car and tell u if the mileage has bn put bck. id say it has under the circumstances.
