Why is the motoring press so sniffy about these? I remember Flop Gear people saying they were "cheap", as if that were an insult. "Buy a proper one" they said.

I've never driven a Beemer; are the Compacts that bad, or is it just a question of snobbery? Are they specced out decently, and is the boot useless?

The specs are the same as the other three series. They've stopped making the compact now - but they were definitely as good and the same up to the c pillar as ay other 3series. The boot did let them down but I don't know why you would buy one for the boot space !?!?

The problem with them is they are the same money as normal three. Much like an X3 - they are similar or the same money as an X5 - BMW pricing structure leaves something to be desired.
they dont drive as well as a 3 series as they lack the rear suspension of it, imho it looks like a turkey anyway
i bought one brand new in 1996 and it was the best car ive ever had it was 15k and had loads of bits on it including parking sensors would you believe.
