Why does my car stall when idling?

I have a 1997 Vauxhall Astra with 81000 miles on the clock. After years of trouble free motoring it has started to stall when idling at traffic lights , road junctions or turning corners. The engine doesn't always re start first time. Although the problem is still intermittent it is now happening on a daily basis. It once stalled on the motorway when traffic had ground to a halt - very scary when you are driving in the outside lane. Has anyone experienced this problem and have you any suggestions regarding the cause?

it could be a number of things, but basically,it sounds as if it needs a major engine service,it could be the very wet weather that we have had lately, but i would get it properly serviced if i were you.
Hi I had a simalar problem and it was my accelirator cable was not tight enough so the car stall all the time as it wasnt getting enough power, it may be a case of getting that ajusted, if you know someone who can do it, its a simple job.
