hI, I have 2000 VW Polo and am experiencing two main problems. Firstly it has an erratic idle and stalls frequently, though not consistently when cold ( and really doesnt like freezing conditions) and when it is accelerating up hill it seems to momentarily lose some power, though this is never enough to cause problems. I am told this could be due to a sensor problem. Does anyone have any ideas. Many thanks

yep..

you have been told correct. Engine coolent temp (ECT)sensor can cause erattic idle on your polo.

but so can your..
IAC idle air conrtol valve
ISC idle speed control actuator
ISC idle speed control actuator position sensor
EGR exhaust gas recirc valve
MAP manifold air pressure sensor
IAT intake air temp sensor
HO2S heated O2 sensor
purge valve
fuel pressure regulator

guessing or changing all of these could work out very expensive so i would suggest taking it to a garage which has diagnostic equipment.
I have a 2001 Polo 1,4 which is a very good runner. I am told that the breather pipe from the engine to the air filter can get blocked with gunge, which could result in the symptoms you describe. Worth a try - and quite a simple task. Also have you changed the plugs ? They go for 40,000 miles without attention so they could be due for renewal. Not cheap at 35 a set but e-bay worth a try.

But it sounds like the car needs a good service with the engine electronically analysed. Keep well away from VW main dealers, they're expensively useless. I'm lucky to have a VW specialist nearby and he's honest, reasonable and a VW whizz kid. Good Luck,
