i have a 1999 citroen xantia 1800 16v, is it possible to convert to run on gas? and if so any idea of the cost?

on my mums insurance but car is in my name

Yes, it is possible to do an LPG conversion but I don't think you'd have much change out of a grand.
What I would do is sell it and buy either the 1.9 or 2.1 diesel Xantias. More reliable, economical and you can use a variety of fuels.
The XUD9 diesel engine is a superb unit from which these new HDi engines have been developed.

thanks m8 that does help, but its findin a half decent one for a reasonable price. the less than 50p a litre for gas has quite a lure to it which was why i was askin
