fiat punto 2003

hi there i have a fiat punto that is now over 4 years old.....everytime we try to put the heating on in the car it switches the side lights on instead...does anyone know why it does that and how i would go about fixing the problem or getting it fixed... as our local garage wanted to charge us 50 quid to look at it for an hour and they also said they never heard of a fault like that! any suggestions would be mostly appreciated.
