van very sluggish yesterday, tho just passed its MOT last week, come to start it this morning and dead as a do-do. Turn the key in the ignition and it clicks once. could it be the alternater?

Nothing to do with just passing the MOT unless the examiner has disturbed something.

Could be the alternator or a duff battery or an electric leak or loose battery connections.

the alternator on these engines is located behind the front bumper next to the sump and ive seen a few where water gets sprayed up and corrodes the connections, worth checking

as they say above if you cant get it running with a jump start or power pack,i would try a battery first & then check charge rate it could be the alternator or a bad/corroded connection. if it wont start at all could be a starter motor or ignition switch.
