stiff gears

for the last few weeks my gears have felt stiff, even in neutral. the worst problem is when moving from 2nd to 3rd gear, when sometimes it just won't go in unless I really shove it. it feels like it needs some lubrication, but I know very little about cars.it's driving fine besides.

it's an Alfa Romeo 147. please don't say it's going to be really expensive!

There is a linkage on top of the gear box that might benafit from lubrication, but it may need a set of cables,
Is the problem still the same with the engine switched off? if not then it may be the clutch or hydrolics on the way oiut

thanks bigboots, I've not tried it with the engine off but will give it a try.
