last night mon 23/2/09 evening herald a punter bought a car in the north seckond hand 06 when she went to pay vrt in the souththey charged her on how much the same year car would be worth in the south lets say she paid 8.thousand irish for it they charged heron 10.thousand what they customs reckon it would be sold for in the south if this is so she made very little saving it was not worth the effort buying north. can anyone shed any light on this as i was thinking of buying s/h up north

No, R.O.I. vrt is a registration tax which is levied on top of V.A.T. And yes it is charged at the estmated value of that car in the republic, not on the price paid in the U.K or elsewhere. It should still be possible to make serious savings by buying in the U.K. provided you do not buy new.
