what was the car that had similar stylings to the ford mustang released i think in the 1970's? was it one of the versions of the ford cortina?

Do you mean the original (mk I) Ford Capri?
Or, possibly, Mk1 Lotus Cortina.

AFAIK it was the 1968 Capri whose chassis was based on the MkII Cortina
