Leaky Focus!

I have a 54 plate Ford Focus and have noticed a puddle of water in the driver footwell under the carpet which is soaking through to the mats. There is no loss of fluids from the engine and no signs of a leakage from doors, roof etc. I have looked underneath but cannot see any obvious signs of entry. Can anyone suggest where else I could look or where it could be coming in from?

Check the drain holes on the N/S + OFF / S bulkhead areas. are your windows shut tight? Door seals, are they in god order?

There is a known Ford bulletin regarding water in footwells (usually NS if RHD car)
It is caused by the Pollen Filter Air Plenum (plastic box flush with NS of scuttle trim) It is often knackered by servicing mechanice taking off the cover (parts on it break off) which leaves you needing a cover. The plenum seal leaks and goes into the car.
I used to have a copy of bulletin .. not any more, sorry.
If you can't find any other reason, check with Ford dealer and ask if you can read the Focus Heater Plenum leaking into footwell TSB.

A Friend of mine had a Ford with similar problem.After a lot of searching the garage eventually found a seam about a foot long had not been spot welded properly.. Every time he went through a puddle, water was forced up through the seam. After welding the problem disappeared.

I did a smilar welding job to the one that VULCAN describes on a neighbours focus last year, although the weld was not as long as that, ( about four inches in total,) but still enough to let water in.

Icemaiden If your car has been serviced on a regular basis by your local agent I cannot see it costing you anything if they, have been doing the regular servie

I think covers are 30-40quid .. Pollen filter should be changed at same time.
The poor seam issue is/was a sealant problem, and can be fixed with seam sealer.
Nothing is solid-welded any more.
There are a lot of areas in Focus that are only spot-welded every several inches.

Yes it has been regularly serviced at the Ford garage, every year as suggested. It is going in for it's MOT in a few weeks so I will mention it to them then. No I am almost hoping this is the problem as it sounds fairly easy to rectify.

I have just traced the same fault on my 2001 Focus to be at the top LH corner of the windscreen. I have a small gap (about 2mm wide by 20mm long) where the windscreen seal is not in contact with the bodywork. I poured water into it and heard a glugging sound, some of the water then emerged from behind the plastic cover of the door pillar inside the car at the side of the dashboard. I did this check with the front passenger door open, and being very carfull where I poured the water!

Water leaking is a normal problem for any one.I have faced many problem related to the water leakage.Some time we don't notice the problem of small leakage.Then the small leak can be very serious for any one.I have traced many leakage problem so if we will not focus on it then it can be very difficult to fix it at right time.
