Council MOT test centres
6 Answers
Hi everyone, has anyone had any experience using council run MOT test centres? Apparently they have them at their depots, I have found the address for my local one. Just wondered if anyone had used them and if they were satisfied that the tests were done up to standard and honestly (good or bad).

I was thinking that even though you may have to pay the full Mot fee, it may be cheaper in the long run. There are garages doing mot for £27.00 but as you say, it is in their interest to find some little thing wrong with it so they can make up the cost of the cheap Mot. Hopefully with the council you would get a totally impartial assessment. Thanks again, foxyferret.
I used to use either a council run MOT centre or another which did not undertake repairs – therefore neither had a vested interest in failing my car for financial reward. Unfortunately I no longer live close to such a test station.
I became friendly with one of the MOT testers, and he told me that when he was working for another MOT garage, he was paid commission on any repairs that came the garages way, as a result of MOT failures.
Imagine you’re an MOT tester with that payment incentive – are you going to fail a car you are testing?
I reckon the reason many councils have their own MOT test facilities is that they are p!ssed off at being ripped of by MOT test stations, but have the resources to do it themselves.
