Thudding Brakes

Hi all,

Have a Rover 25 X reg, which recently has started making a thudding noise when braking. Not every time I brake, in fact only about a third of the time, but it is every time I drive.

There'll be like a funny almost ticking noise while driving, and then when I apply the brakes it'll be like thud...........thud..........thud ..... thud....thud..thud..thud. The more pressure I apply to the brake, the more rapid the thuds.

When I've had to brake suddenly, the car doesn't slow down as quick as it does when there's no thudding, and it slightly tries to move off course.

Does anyone have any thoeries as to what this might be? It's been suggested to me that it could be warped brake discs?

Most likely a cracked brake disk.
Get discs/pads looked at asap.

sounds like the abs kicking in - if it has it.

the thudding sounds like the abs, I would look at the wear on the pads/discs ..

Pads and Discs sound worn out. ABS may be an issue. Does it clunk when you apply brakes in reverse? It could be your caliper has unseated or a seized piston is not returning properly (hence the intermittent nature of the fault) Regardless, get it checked out and it shouldn't be expensive as Rover brakes are not very sophisticated and parts are readily available.
