Can anyone tell me what a MAP sensor is and if it is likely to be expensive to replace on a VW Golf?

manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) is one of the sensors used in the engine's electronic control system, as a rough guess (depends on original or genuine VW part ) £80.00- £125.00 for the part and shouldnt be no more than 1/2 hour labour at whatever rate your garage is charging this is assuming it is easy to get to and is not buried in the engine somewhere.

Chas, do you know much about this sort of thing? It's just I've looked on a couple of other forums and some of the comments say the MAP sensor comes up as the fault but it is often something else.

The problem with my car is that a couple of times, yesterday being the last, the throttle loses all power while I'm driving and you just have to roll it to a stop. After a while with the engine off, I was able to accelerate again.
only that MAP sensors can be a common problem on certain vehicles, Golfs being one ( Vauxhalls being another) wether its the true diagnosis is another question, really need someone switched on with VWs and with decent diagnostic equipment.
