Cruise Control Problem

I've got a 56plate Golf1.9tdi match and whilst driving yesterday the cruise control suddenly failed. When I stopped the car on reaching my destination I started the car up again and the symbol appeared on the dash to show it working, then disappeared adfter about 30 seconds. Has anyone any tips or ideas what i should be looking for before I have to succumb to the dreaded dealership? Many thanks in advance.

Tried disconnecting battery but has not sorted problem. I have noticed, however, the symbol disappears when I indicate right - it stays lit when indicating left - do you think this would indicate a faulty switch?

Rather than a dealership, do you have an independent specialist near you? I have access to TWO who deal with VW-group cars only ie VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda. The one I use does a very good service at half dealer prices and looks at / fixes small jobs free. Worth a try if you have the option.
