125cc learner legal motorbike

I've been riding a Peugeot Speedfight 49cc scooter for the past year. I retook my CBT in June, as well as my theory test, so I have 18 months in which to take my practical test.

I wanted to get a learner legal manual 125cc bike to get better experience of clutch and gears on my daily commute, as I'm not the type to do one of these intensive bike course things or loads of expensive lessons.

I liked the Suzuki RV125 Van Van, but for love nor money I can't seem to find a secondhand one in my local area (Manchester). My local dealer offered a new one for 2299 in September - that's inexplicably jumped up by 300 this month. I can't afford new!

I'd be looking at a top price of 1300 for a secondhand bike, a few years old is fine and the aesthetics - a few scratches here & there and crap paintwork - aren't important to me. I just need something that I can learn on, take my test on, and enjoy riding on my commute.

Any suggestions for other similar, decent 125cc bikes? Not a chinese import though, something I can get serviced locally and that won't blow up on me anytime soon!

one of the best ways to get a decent 2nd hand bike is to read some of the bike forums. someone who has passed there test and is getting a larger machine will often sell it on one of these sites.the only one i can give is this one below. if you sign up to this site you could ask questions and get some good advice from other bikers.

Hi Dr Filth & Snagged

Thanks for your answers - I had a look at that one on Hunts, just a bit out of my price range but very nice nonetheless :o)

I am a member of one of those biking forum things but again no joy. I think I live in the wrong area, all the good deals are down south. I shall have to keep looking unless someone can suggest another 125cc that fits the bill?
Keep your eyes open for a honda CG 125, they were/are the training centers bike of choice a couple of years ago, 4 stroke, and aparently pretty bullet proof mechanically.
