What is the best engine (and cooling system) to put into a 1972 Bay VW Camper? The top priority is for best economy of miles per gallon. Also what gearbox would be needed for this engine?

You'd be better asking this on a specialised VW camper site rather than a general Q&A site like this.

Hi, a 2 litre air-cooled engine (with gearbox) if you can find one! I ran a 1600cc air cooled for 15 years which had a modified inlet manifold carrying a Webber carburettor. This combination returned 30 mpg driving sensibly. I think it's slightly condescending of "ChuckFickens" to suggest that answerbank aficionados can't answer certain types of questions and specialist sites will generally advise you to fit whatever they have the most of in stock (or maybe i've just become cynical with age!) best wishes, Paul.
