How much do you think it should cost to have a gearbox reconditioned? The garage want to charge me just over £1000 to send my gearbox away to be reconditioned. This includes any new parts needed and labour.

What gearbox problem do you have? you can get the job done for half or quarter of that cost, check out your local family run garages & get as many quotes as you can, look on EBay for a 2nd hand gearbox.

Had a quick look on Ebay, asking prices for the boxes from £100>>>> upwards, if you do decide to go with this option, whoever does the job for you needs to replace the Clutch, Release bearing, & the pressure plate as a whole unit, at times you can get away with leaving the old ones in but that depends on how long they have been in. do not go for the realy cheap clutch replacements, they can be problematic

Thanks for that TWR. The quote was from a local independent garage that two people recommended to me. The price includes a new clutch. The problem was not being able to engage 1st and 2nd gear. The car was taken to the garage in question by the AA so will be difficult to say no. Just want to make sure I am not being ripped off.

If you are not getting 1st & 2nd, its pos it's the clutch, if it needs a fresh box find one yourself.

I would think that was a selector/gate/detent problem, or synchro collapsed.
