speed limits on 'the bends'...

we have a few sets of the bends round by me...and all of them have a national speed limit sign ...yet all over the place they have painted the word SLOW on the road ...

it is pretty impossible to go 70 on these roads except on the occasional lengthy straight bit....but most people dont
it seems most poeple go about 40 on these roads so why not just make the speed limit on these roads about 40/50 and save the bother of painting slow all over the place?

surely allowing people to try to traverse these extremely bendy and narrow roads, edged largely by ditches or sometimes walls right up against them, is asking for trouble as some young boyracer idiot will try it ...

is there any logic to this?
cheers

if you say the speed limit on this road is 60, and you think, 20 is what it should be .....then i would question your driving abilities.
Question Author
what nonsense R1...so you consider being asked to adhere to a speed limit a punishment?
i did not say every single bit of the road should have an individual separate limit at all and you know it...you are just being awkward and putting words into my mouth.

i am stating perhaps having a general speed limit of about 40 on a road such as this will ensure idiots do not try to go as fast as is allowed by law...
is that so hard to understand?

and mick - nowhere have i said the limit should be 20 - i said most people often have to drive at around 20 or so for most of the way round anyway in order to safely go round most of the bends - another one who cannot read or comprehend...

if you question my driving abilities because i dont try to stick to the highest speed limits allowed, and rather choose a safe speed, then it is precisely people like you that this post is aimed at...
joko Idiots rarely drive within the speed limit.
most of it you have go about 20 anyway

which, i would take as you think 20 is the speed you should drive at.
You have aimed this at me? interesting, where have i bragged about my driving spees?
speeds
So you want to re evaluate all the roads then? Sorry joko but this is getting very much like your vegetarian thread the other week, you clearly are passionate about it but I don't think you've thought it through. No I don't think limits are a punishment but neither do I think that we all need nannying because of the ill judgements of some and your beein your bonnet is the answer. It ain't broke, don't fix it!
slow drivers can be just as dangerous as fast drivers.
I had a numpty join the motorway in front of me Friday, doing a speed of 35 mph, they never increased there speed at all. mental
Question Author
rather think it is you with the bee in your bonnet here!

i just made an observation and asked why they set such high limits in the first place on roads that are clearly incapable of sustaining that speed....
i most certainly dont feel particularly strongly about it either way - it was a question

you are the one taking my comments way overboard - suddenly i want all road re- evaluated and drivers nannying etc?! oh dear. not sure where you have got that from.

its a very simple concept...lower speed limits lead to less accidents... not a lot to think through there...its a fact...or are you suggesting putting a sign up with 40 on it on these roads will some how cause some problem? really?

and using a previous thread to try to demean my post and bolster your own is lazy and a cop out....i could do the same and suggest that it would appear you have the bee as you clearly feel any road rules are beneath your superior driving skills...?

and mick - no not you personally but people that appear to think if a road is set at 60 then that is the speed you should try to travel... you said you question my skills because i choose not to do that.

and yes slow drivers are dangerous too...but 40 on a single carriage extremely bendy road is hardly slow...

no idea why people have taken such umbrage here with this notion...i suspect a few issues with speeding here...
i suspect a few issues with driving confidence.

what road are we talking about, i will google it and give my honest opinion. .
But your plan will mean re evaluating speed limits won't it? There are roads like you describe with lower limits, so have the highways people just missed some then?. You seem to get angry when I point out the logical effects of your suggestion. Can you give us an example of a road you are talking about, ie google maps. I suspect a good driver in a good car would be able to carry the speed you deem impossible.
Question Author
mick, i am cautious on these roads certainly, and there have been times when i have felt for a few second like i am going a touch fast, but i and along with most people cannot go that fast...i dont see that as lack of confidence, just caution...i am certainly not holding up traffic...(except for the odd impatient speeder)
i dont believe you could go 60 on these roads safely - maybe on the odd straight if you floor it, but could not continue long like that...

R1, i just mean a few of the particularly bendy ones, not all roads.

i will try to find a reference for google earth

...(except for the odd impatient speeder)

but they are not speeding ,.... are they !
Question Author
eddie, i did say 60 on a later post...i was just using examples ...

no mick not technically they are not, but i mean they are trying to hurry people who are already driving fairly fast and safely trying to drive, by tailgating...and trying to whizz in and out of traffic overtaking - its intimidating for some... but its unsafe to expect people to drive faster than is comfortable for them dont you think?
they may feel safe to whizz along as fast as they can but others dont...
seriously most people drive these bends at an average speed. (and yes very slow ones annoy me too)

i am not sure why people are so bothered by this question - it was a simple question...i am not ranting and raving and going mad here, it was just a thought that occurred to me...so i asked the question - as is the purpose of this site

i have asked before on here why you cannot ask a simple question anymore without being accused of hysteria and of having issues...and here is another example of it...
I think the problem is the lack of information to the driver. Having the word SLOW or even a sign showing chevrons is useless to a driver not familier with that road. Maybe we should do want they do on the continent and have a sign which shows the curvature of the bend as sometimes the road could even be a hairpin and a 180% bend..
How about double standards Joko?

you mentioned 'issues' first .
Look lets face it, no matter what type of sign you use there's always some idiot that thinks he/she is that good that the rules dont apply to them
I think it's about time that the speed limits in this country are reviewed, they were set up when cars were no where near as advanced as they are now. Braking distances and so on are much shorter now than would of been when the limits were brought in.
it's because it's a "why doesn't everyone agree with me post " any sign of the road ref joko?
Question Author
no r1 its not, its a genuine question - i dont get why they would choose those limits...when its clear the road is too bendy

nothing you have said has answered me...
