if by chance there are any mechanics or engineers,
i am taking the rear end wheel bearing off a bmw 318is, and the wheel bearing seems to be seized, without waiting for monday to use a press, whats the best way to do it, is there a trick to it, any help would be appreciated
Use a chistle to get the old one out if you have not got a Burner, to replace, use the old bearing to tap in the new, use a smear of grease. but be very careful otherwise you could end up having to purchase another bearing.
Slacken off the Handbrake adjuster, you will find the adjust esters under the Handbrake shroud, be careful when you lift this off as the body is made of plastic. Make sure the car is in 1st / reverse, chock the front wheels, jack up the side you are doing & place the road wheel under the body near the jacking point. there is a Torx bolt on the hub, spray it with WD40, crack it with a hammer before removal, the hub should come off with ease as soon as you have slackened off the adjuster.
Tap the drum & the centre of the drum after taking off the Torx bolt, you may have to wiggle the drum about, its due to ridges on the Shoe that causes this= dust, if you force it off the springs will detach on the inside & the reverse of the Linnings.
Put the hub into the vice facing down wards & spray in some WD40, , get a good socket the same size as the hub, leave the WD for 5 mins, smack the socket this should knock out the hub, you may need several attempts. put some rags etc on the floor or get someone to hold it whilst you are smacking the Socket.
If you stick with it Top-Driver you will succeed I can assure you, the other alternative, is there a haulage Comp near you that maintains their own fleet? if so, take the hub to them & ask them would they put a Oxy gun to heat & remove the bearing that is your only other option.
i'v one more option, in Windsor motors they have a press that pushes down on the hub with up to a couple of ton of force, i just needed the car over the weekend, but my brother is taking it in for that now
