buying a used car

i have just bought a car and when i look up the reg number to get it insured no veichles come up yet the car has already been taxed before and was moted in feb . all relevent documents seem to be there. why therefore can no insurance companies find it??

It's just not on the system .. Mine aren't.
Both are imported .. and even though the cars have been insured here before, you will have to go through the rigmarole of matching a model name, etc, to get it sorted.
My Renauly runaround is imported from France .. and has no model badge .. so I have to pick one (lowest I can get away with) from insurers list.

Try putting the reg. no. through askmid and see if it comes up on the database. http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/
You should be able to enter the cars data (make, model etc) directly into the insures website if the reg no isn't recognised..
Is It a realy old car like 20years or so? Or is there any letters similar to numbers in the reg that you are confusing with each other?
The previous owner of my current vehicle had it on a cherished number plate – even after the transfer, a number of these web sites (insurance/tyre fitters/motor factors) either did not recognise it or gave the wrong vehicle details - based on the number plate info. This even caused one garage to have the wrong parts supplied for a repair to the vehicle.
