google maps estimates it at around £102
Liverpool to Dorset is 244 miles. I work on a basis of 15p per mile (for a 1.6 litre, poorly serviced, X-reg Escort) so that would be £36.60 each way.

But my estimate usually seems to be a little on the high side, so I would expect £70 to cover the return journey.

before anyone complains, its not my car so i cant work it out myself...plus this is petrol, mine is diesel...and just need to know potential costings please

thank you
that is based on a standard (not high consumption) petrol car, where petrol is 1.35 per litre
The ViaMichelin routes planner (which makes it 264 miles from Liverpool to Bournemouth) estimates only £25.53 each way, making just over £50.
flipping hell - that's a hellofa difference chris! Perhaps google maps over estimates in order that you are pleased when it's less?
i have just put inot google maps a journey i have done recently (berkshire to glasgow) I know how much petrol money i spent, £70
Google maps is estimating it as £78 so it's pretty close
Can I helpfully suggest a service for your car then, Chris?

The cheapest petrol I have seen this week is at Sainsbury's at 130 pence per litre.

thanks all

bednobs, is that an estimate based on the actual distance from dorset to liverpool in a straightline, or along actual roads?

is the route perhaps somewhat 'long and winding'?

it does seem a massive difference
actual roads (m6 mainly)

its apparently a 16 year old 1.8 celica

any ideas based on that...? my mate seems to think that will cost loads more...

i though if a small car it was cheaper...?
1.8 isn't small
Question Author
i meant the car is small ish...obviously it seems the engine is big though
Even with a 1.8 litre car, the total figure shouldn't come to any more than £80. That assumes that the driver keeps his speed down to 60mph. (Add 10% to 15% to the cost if he drives at 70 to 75mph). Further it assumes that the tyre pressures are correct for the load. (Add 10% to the cost if they're not). Lastly, it assumes that the car is fairly lightly loaded (e.g. two adults and a couple of suitcases). Add 10% to the cost if, for example, there are 5 adults with lots of luggage.
A6 year old 1.8 Celica would do around 30 to the gallon at a steady speed so taking 264 as the mileage this would work out at 8.8gals x4.54 = 40 litres in round figures @ 1.30/ltr = £52 each way
i put £60 in my car and drive 460 miles.
Ankou - using Bangor prices of 1.40/ ltr diesel my car would do 632 - at the combined mpg!
full tank gets me up to 600 or so miles.
In theory, mine should do approx 815 on a full tank!
